Le baby Blues et la depression Post Partum

Baby Blues and Postpartum Depression

What are baby blues?

A few days after giving birth, the majority of mothers go through a period of depression called “baby blues”. It's a reaction caused by all the physical, hormonal and psychological changes related to childbirth .

The mother can then:

  • start to cry "for nothing", have crying fits,
  • having mood swings, such as suddenly being irritable,
  • feeling overwhelmed by events,
  • losing her bearings, her self-confidence.

The baby blues can last a few hours or a few days. The symptoms usually go away on their own. However, the spouse or those around them can provide support and comfort.
If symptoms last more than two weeks, you should talk to a healthcare professional , such as your doctor or midwife. Maybe it's postpartum depression.

Can fathers also have postpartum depression?

Nearly one in ten fathers experience depression during pregnancy or shortly after the birth of their baby . It's a time of change that can be overwhelming for dads too. Symptoms of postpartum depression in fathers can be:

  • Doubts.
  • Loss of self-confidence.
  • A lack of desire to take care of or be interested in the baby.
  • A desire to be away from home.
  • The fear of being judged.
  • A feeling of not finding your place.
